Summer 2007
I've
just returned from ThrillerFest, this year held
in New York City.
During
the course of ThrillerFest, I had the wonderful opportunity to participate
in a panel led by Barry Eisler, internationally-renowned author of the
John Rain series. Other panelists included Zoë Sharp, Vicki Hendrickson,
Jeff Buick, Humphrey Hawkes and Kyle Mills. It was a lively and often
hilarious discourse on the natural of evil and how ostensibly good people
make and live with bad choices.
I also participated in a group photo with many of the Killer Year anthology
contributers (not all could be at ThrillerFest). Publisher's Weekly included
the group shot as the Photo
of the Day the Monday after Thrillerfest.
The real wonder of ThrillerFest, and any conference, is the chance to
hang out with your favorite authors, or get to know folks who may become
your news favorites. I go to these events at least as much as fan as
an author, and I heartily recommend them to readers. ThrillerFest is
one of the newest conferences, but there are many others well worth a
trip: Bouchercon, Left Coast Crimes, the New England Crime Bake, Murder
in the Grove, Malice Domestic, and so many more. If you love crime fiction,
you'll love crime fiction conferences.
The Big Thrill Interviews
Be sure to have a listen to these ThrillerFest
interviews by Jeff Ayers for The Big Thrill. In addition to such
illustrious folks as Lee Child, Lisa Gardner, Jim Rollins, Thriller-award
winner Joe Finder, and many more, Jeff sat down with me for a few minutes
to talk about Lost
Dog, my experiences as a debut author, and my next
effort.
Interviewed by Chris Well
Author Chris Well interviewed me for his blog. Read
it here. Chris has been interviewing all the Killer Year authors, and
as a group they provide an incredible insite into the writing life as well
as the experiences of debut authors. They're all well worth a look.
Upcoming Events
Writers
Faire, August 2. The annual Willamette Writers
Conference opens with the Writers Faire on Thursday, August 2 from 6:00
- 9:00pm at the Portland Airport Sheraton. Over 60 authors participate.
I will be on hand to sell and sign copies of Lost
Dog.
Bouchercon 2007,
September 27 - 30. I'll be on hand for the New Noir panel
Thursday afternoon, as well as a debut authors panel on Wednesday.
Writing News
I have now delivered the submission draft of Chasing
Smoke to my agent, who has sent it on to the publisher. I hope to
have specific news soon. You
can read an early draft of chapter
one here. Meanwhile, I have begun work on my next novel, which also
features Skin Kadash as well as a number of new folks and locations,
tenatively titled The Paths of the Dead. Given the number of
titles I went through before settling on Chasing Smoke for my second
novel, I have no doubt The Paths of the Dead is only temporary.
Early on a sodden Portland, Oregon morning, Peter McKrall, unemployed
smart-ass and kleptomaniac, goes to the park to find his niece's lost toy
dog. He doesn't realize his search is being watched by the paranoid killer
of the dead hooker he finds instead.
Read
an excerpt from Lost Dog.
Lost Dog,
a novel of suspense, available from Midnight
Ink Books.
My short story "Slice of Pie" will appear in this anthology
from the Killer Year authors and their mentors in International
Thriller Writers. Coming Winter 2008 from St. Martin’s
Minotaur. Edited by Lee Child. |
